People have asked me how I come up with sketches so here it goes... I usually have someone pose for me and then create a quick sketch from their pose. Then I scan that sketch into the computer and morph it a bit and make it better. Then I print that sketch out and make a final sketch on vellum. I guess you find something that works for you and go with it.

I always loved the story of Odysseus and wanted to illustrate something from it, so I decided to do the part where he blinds the cyclops. This is just a piece of the final illustration. This piece goes with the scripture in Matthew 7:6 in the bible that says, "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you." She is supposed to symbolize the swine, and how so many times we are enticed to give in to worldliness, such as giving away our virtue or chastity, our purity. On the outward appearance she looks enticing, but all all she has to offer is a dirty pig pen in exchange for your pearl of greatest price.

A Dying Swan_value study

This piece is called, "A Dying Swan" and was inspired by these words:"The dying swan song forever lost its cries of innocence. The rain is falling down like silence in a shroud." I wanted to do a piece that symbolized something good becoming tainted by bad. The swan (which characterizes purity and innocence) has been killed. The girl's innocence has been tainted or killed in some way through sin or someone else has taken the goodness from her (like abuse or whatnot). She feels like an empty shell. This is the value painting and composition layout. I'm ready for the final illustation. Check back it will be up soon!
